Tempe family affected by burst water pipe seeks short-term accommodation
A Tempe man is cleaning up what’s left of his home after a burst water pipe caused a flood to enter the residence last week.
He and his family are now looking for short-term accommodation while workers repair his house.
“I have a lot of stuff that was hidden,” said Neil Sundberg.
East Valley Disaster Services crews packed up all of Sundberg’s belongings on Monday. The home he is leaving behind now will look different when he returns.
“We’re going to lose our kitchen cabinets, they tell us, and I have some wooden sleepers, they’re going to take them all out. Yes, it’s going to be a serious change,” he said.
ABC15 caught up with Sundberg last week as cleanup crews attempted to contain the flooding caused solely by a burst water main across the street.
Most of the mud and water has now disappeared, but Sundberg has spent countless hours cleaning, drying and organizing all of his belongings.
“Yeah, it was a bit stressful,” he said.
While laborers help with the move to a warehouse, Sundberg, his wife and the Arizona State University students who rent the apartment with him need a new place to live for now, or perhaps for a few months.
“We tried to find a place for the eight of us and a place where we know what to take with us,” Sundberg said.
And how much will it all cost? According to Sundberg, it will be expensive. But the city of Tempe wants to cover the costs in full. For Sundberg, this is news that he is keen to absorb.
“First we have to find a place to go. That’s the most important thing. And if we can do that, we’ve made it,” he said.
Sundberg says he is very grateful for the outpouring of support from the community over the past few days, especially his neighbors who have helped him in every way they can.
