Red Sox hitter surprisingly mentioned as trade option for additional pitchers
The Boston Red Sox will have to start from scratch in terms of their starting lineup this coming offseason.
Boston will have Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford and Brayan Bello ready to play on Opening Day. The Red Sox will have to deal with the other two spots on the roster, one of which is expected to go to Lucas Giolito once he’s ready to return to the mound.
The Red Sox will likely be looking for at least one new addition this offseason, and Rick McNair of FanSided has suggested Triston Casas as a trade target.
“This season has been a nightmare for the 24-year-old left-hander after a rib cartilage injury sidelined him for months, but despite his absence, the Red Sox offense performed well,” McNair said. “After a 2023 season in which Casas hit 24 home runs and had 65 RBIs, more was to be expected. Casas is a patient young man with a BB% nearly double the league average.”
“Defensively, Casas can best be described as routinely solid. He’s no Doug Mientkiewicz, but he’s a long way from the iron glove of Dick Stuart. Looking in the rearview mirror, the Red Sox had a similar first baseman who took three years to develop, and Casas could follow a trajectory like Mo Vaughn. The Red Sox have survived without Casas, and a possible infield move could stabilize the position — Rafael Devers is a thought. Given the logjam in the infield, there’s an opportunity to move chess pieces. Whatever the Red Sox decide to do, Casas will be under team control through 2028.”
The Red Sox will likely look to expand their starting lineup and could even negotiate a trade, but it would be a complete surprise if they traded Casas. He seems all but certain to be the team’s starting first baseman in 2025 and beyond.
