13-year-old West Virginia football player dies after losing consciousness during practice
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A 13-year-old boy in West Virginia died last week after apparently sustaining an injury during football practice.
CBS affiliate station WOWK-TV said Cohen Craddock died on Aug. 24 after being injured during a practice in Boone County on Aug. 23. Craddock was an eighth-grader at Madison Middle School.
The boy’s father, Ryan Craddock, told the television station that his son injured his head during a tackle during training. After the game, the 13-year-old boy stood up, took a few steps and then lost consciousness, his father said.
Ryan Craddock told WOWK-TV that his son suffered from oxygen deprivation and brain swelling on the way to the local hospital. The 13-year-old boy reportedly never regained consciousness.
“He was Mr. Personality,” Ryan Craddock told the television station. “He liked to joke around and make you smile. Even when he was feeling bad, he wanted to make you feel good. He was that kind of person. Just a big heart, a big teddy bear.”
Madison, West Virginia, is about four hours from Pittsburgh.
“Madison Middle School has lost a member of its football team in a tragic accident on the field. … Please pray for the Craddock family and the students and staff of Madison MS,” Roane County High School posted on Facebook after the boy’s death.
