Last call for drunk drivers: Nationwide raids begin

ROANOKE, VA – Drive sober, otherwise you will be stopped.

Senior Trooper Brett Southern has been with the Virginia State Police for nearly 20 years and has witnessed between 500 and 600 drunk driving arrests during that time.

Monday – A new nationwide campaign has been launched to keep drunk drivers off the roads.

130 law enforcement agencies are joining forces by Labor Day to set up 95 checkpoints for alcohol testing and other measures to ensure your safety.

10 News reporter Abbie Coleman wanted to learn more about what a drunk driving stop might look like, so Southern walked her through some of the tests used to determine alcohol intake – including a breathalyzer test, an eye movement test and a straight-ahead test. The catch? She was wearing goggles that made it look like she had an extremely high blood alcohol content.

Coleman’s tests were just for fun, but when it comes to accidents caused by drunk drivers, it’s no fun.

“It’s not just the people who were involved in the accident. There are a lot of people involved, church groups, people who have known someone from childhood into adulthood. It ripples like a wave. So don’t just think about yourself, because you could be affecting more than just yourself,” Southern said.
