Democrats sue Georgia Election Commission over changes made by officials that are now being investigated and possible impeachment
Democrats sued the Georgia State Election Board over changes made by officials, which are now under investigation.
Three allies of former President Donald Trump on the State Election Board proposed new changes to state election law that would allow for stricter treatment of ballot counting and election certification. The three were hit by an ethics complaint from the former head of the Fulton County Election Board, prompting Democrats to argue that the ethics investigation should be reviewed before the new measures are passed. They also argued that the committee members should be fired.
“These new requirements introduce significant uncertainty into the post-election process and, if interpreted as their drafters proposed, will create chaos by establishing new processes that conflict with existing statutory obligations,” the lawsuit says of the proposed election changes.
The lawsuit was filed by the Democratic National Party, the Democratic Party of Georgia, local officials and political candidates with the support of Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign team.
Rep. Nikema Williams (D-GA), chairwoman of the Democratic Party in the US state of Georgia, joined Trump in praising the lawsuit in a statement in which he referred to the three state election officials as his “pit bulls.”
“The three members Donald Trump called his ‘pit bulls’ for ‘victory’ disagree, and they are determined to establish a new power that will allow them to refuse to certify an election result should their preferred candidate lose – as he did in 2020,” she said. New York Times reported.
The move to change voting rules just before the 2024 election even drew criticism from some Republicans, including Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

“Activists seeking to force last-minute changes to the election process outside of the legislative process are undermining voter confidence and placing a burden on election workers,” he said in a statement obtained by the news agency. “Misguided attempts by the State Election Board will delay election results and undermine chain of custody safeguards. Georgia voters reject this last-minute chaos, and so should the unelected members of the State Election Board.”
The office of Governor Brian Kemp (R-GA) appears to be taking the lawsuit seriously. Kemp told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in a statement that he would like to seek advice from the Attorney General as to whether he has the authority to dismiss the three board members.
