Two Massena residents charged with murder of child last November
CANTON – Two Massena residents have been charged with killing a 3-year-old boy last November.
A St. Lawrence County grand jury indicted Jovannie E. Vega, 24, and Kaitlin Cyrus, 24, on one count each of second-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, first-degree assault and second-degree assault.
The charges stem from the death of Kayden Flowers on November 28 at the University of Vermont Medical Center.
According to Massena police, the child died as a result of an attack that resulted in a brain hemorrhage, severe brain swelling, loss of brain function, a broken femur, a broken arm and liver damage.
It is alleged that Cyrus allowed Vega to “continually physically abuse the three-year-old victim” and “fail to get help and not seek medical attention for the victim until 48 hours after the abuse,” police said.
During the attack, Vega is said to have thrown the victim against the bedroom wall and then thrown the child to the floor several times.
