Girl dies after parents treat injuries only with smoothies

A 12-year-old girl has died in Texas after suffering for four days from injuries that her mother and stepfather tried to treat with smoothies instead of calling medical help. They finally called 911 on Monday night, and when emergency responders arrived, they found Miranda Sipps unconscious, the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. The girl, a student and cheerleader at Jourdanton Junior High School in Christine, was pronounced dead a short time later in a hospital emergency room, NBC News reports. Her mother, Denise Balbaneda, and stepfather, Gerald Gonzales, have been charged, according to KSAT.

The sheriff’s office issued the following report: Miranda was seriously injured in some way Thursday night. She was placed on a cot at the family’s home in Christine, about 45 miles south of San Antonio; no other children were there. Miranda did not speak, only fluttering her eyelids and sometimes moving her hands slightly. Her parents tried to give her smoothies with vitamins and later said they did what they could to save her, but the child could not swallow.

Investigators suspect the couple didn’t call for help because they didn’t want officers to come to their home. When emergency responders arrived, they were picked up on the street. According to NBC, Balbaneda and Gonzales are charged with omission of aggravated assault on a child. An autopsy report is pending. (More stories from Texas.)
