Apple allows removal of standard apps in Europe

Apple will offer its European end users even more choice for the default apps on iPhones and iPads this year. This will be implemented in the upcoming versions of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

In a message to developers, the tech giant announced that European end users will have more freedom of choice when it comes to standard apps with the new operating systems. In this way, Apple wants to comply with the requirements of the European Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Which apps?

With the launch of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, European Apple users will see a selection menu to manage the default apps on their devices. They will then be able to select their preferred apps for making calls, sending messages and managing passwords, keyboards and spam filters. In spring 2025, it will also be possible to select an alternative for navigation and translation.

Additionally, you can remove the default installed apps App Store, Messages, Photos, Camera, and Safari. However, the Phone and Settings apps cannot be uninstalled.

Improved browser selection

In addition, Apple announced that it will offer a new browser selection screen. This screen is intended to provide more information about possible alternative browsers to Apple’s Safari. This screen will soon be automatically displayed to all European end users who use Safari by default.

Alternative app stores

Previously, iOS17.4 allowed users to install apps from apps other than Apple’s App Store. It is now also possible to select an alternative to Apple Pay as a contactless payment feature.
