Jennifer Lopez cites reasons for divorce from Ben Affleck after she requested to drop his last name
Jennifer Lopez cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for her separation from Ben Affleck just two years after their wedding.
The 55-year-old “Jenny From the Block” singer filed the divorce papers on the second anniversary of their wedding in Georgia, giving April 26 as the date of separation.
The “On The Floor” singer also stated, according to court documents obtained by Page Six, that she does not want to award spousal support to herself or 52-year-old Affleck.
Earlier this week, Lopez that the Oscar winner’s surname comes from the Her name is on the divorce petition.
The singer asked a judge to change her legal name from Jennifer Lynn Affleck to Jennifer Lynn Lopez after taking the actress’s last name at her secret wedding in July 2022.
She had previously raved about becoming Mrs. Affleck and described the gesture as “romantic” and “traditional.”
“People will still call me Jennifer Lopez. But my legal name will be Mrs. Affleck because we are united,” she told Vogue in November 2022.
“We are husband and wife. I am proud of that. I don’t think that is a problem.”
J.Lo, however, admitted that it would be out of the question for the couple if Affleck changed his last name to Lopez, adding that it was “not traditional.”
“It’s not romantic. It feels like a power play, you know what I mean? I have complete control over my life and my destiny and I feel empowered as a woman and as a person,” she said at the time.
“I can understand that people have their feelings about it, and that’s fine. But if you want to know what I think about it, I just find it romantic. For me, it’s still tradition and romance, and maybe that’s just me.”
Shortly after the wedding, the “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” singer announced in her newsletter “On the JLo” in July 2022 that she had changed her last name and would now only call herself “Mrs. Jennifer Lynn Affleck.”
They reportedly did not have a prenuptial agreement, which could lead to a dispute over assets, including their $68 million Beverly Hills mansion, which they have put up for sale.
