LDH issues water warning for Madison Parish residents
MADISON PARISH, La. (KNOE) – The Louisiana Department of Health has issued a Do Not Use Water Advisory for Madison Parish residents served by the Walnut Bayou Water System.
LDH officials said a water main break on Highway 603 near Verhagen Road exposed drinking water to paraquat, a toxic chemical commonly used as a herbicide.
LDH stated in a press release:
“The exposure occurred when a farmer was filling a tank and the low pressure in the water line caused a backflow of chemicals from the tank. Some customers reported a strong chemical smell and taste in the tap water after exposure.
LDH has worked closely with local authorities to identify the affected area, collect drinking water samples, and assess the risk to residents. The map below shows the affected area for Walnut Bayou. Anyone in the green area should not use the water.”
What does a do not use notice mean?
“Do not use” means the following:
- People and animals should not drink the water or use it in any way that could potentially result in the ingestion of substances, such as preparing any type of food, washing dishes or brushing teeth.
- Discard any ice in your ice cream maker and discontinue use until the order is lifted.
- People and animals should not bathe (or swim) in this water or use it to wash their hands.
- No water should be used for washing clothes.
- Tap water can be used to flush the toilet.
This is an evolving story.
