Lawrence names 31 players for Pacific Nations Cup
The USA Men’s Eagles have confirmed 31 names for the pool of traveling players to begin this month’s Pacific Nations Cup, the program’s first foray into newly reformed global competition.
Head coach Scott Lawrence and his staff will join the team for a 10-day pre-competition training camp at the Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista, California, before commuting up the coast to Los Angeles for the first-round match against Canada at Dignity Health Sports Park. Tickets for the USA vs. Canada match are on sale now, with group discounts available for clubs and teams.
Six uncapped players will join the convoy for the Pacific Nations Cup finals in Los Angeles and later Japan in an attempt to win the USA Eagle title. World Rugby recently announced that the 2025 Pacific Nations Cup will serve as the qualifying round for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. This year’s inaugural tournament will be a positive milestone for the USA’s expanded player pool ahead of next year’s qualification.
“The five-week Pacific Nations Cup campaign provides an opportunity to familiarise this Eagles side with the massive changes in preparation and intensity required for test match rugby,” said head coach Scott Lawrence. “With new faces comes new energy. We expect this group to go into training camp with a competitive mindset to gain valuable test match minutes and for some to extend that opportunity into the November tour.”
Rand Santos and Dominic Besag received tour invitations after spring and summer tours with the USA U20 team and reached the World Rugby Trophy final against hosts Scotland, furthering the initiative to develop the younger group of players who are expected to represent the United States on home soil at the 2031 Rugby World Cup. Toby Fricker and Pono Davis jump from the reserve list to the travel squad in July after outstanding seasons in the MLR. Sean McNulty, Cyrille Cama and William Waguespack all join the squad for the first time and are seeking their international debut.
