Coach Prime and CU Buffs bring in former Michigan assistant coach George Helow – BuffZone
Colorado adds more experience to its coaching staff.
Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders has hired George Helow as senior defensive coach, BuffZone confirmed. Bruce Feldman of The Athletic was the first to report on the hire.
Helow was Michigan’s linebackers coach from 2021-22 and was briefly on Alabama’s staff last winter. He was hired by Alabama as an analyst in December, ahead of its game against Michigan in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
Helow, 37, is already on board with the Buffs when he returns to the Centennial State. He was on Colorado State’s staff for four seasons (2016-19).
A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Helow played for Mississippi from 2006 to 2010. He was hired as a defensive intern at Alabama in 2012 and spent the 2013 season as an assistant at Florida State and the 2014-15 season as a GA at Georgia.
In 2016, Helow was hired as a graduate assistant at CSU and took on a defensive quality control role with the Rams in 2017. In 2018, he was named the safety coach at CSU and held that role for two seasons. Under Helow’s tutelage, Jamal Hicks was selected to the All-Mountain West first team in 2019.
Helow then spent one season, in 2020, at Maryland as special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach.
In 2021, Helow was originally hired at Michigan as a safeties coach, but worked with linebackers for two seasons. He and the Wolverines parted ways in February 2023.
