Brad Pitt clarifies his comments on the “final stage” of his acting career

Brad Pitt may be at the beginning of a new professional chapter, but that doesn’t mean he wants to put himself on the back burner just yet.

The Oscar winner sparked rumors two years ago that he was taking steps toward retirement when he cryptically told GQ: “I consider myself to be on the last leg. This last semester or trimester. What will that leg be? And how do I want to shape it?”

In a joint interview with his Wolf co-star George Clooney that appeared in the latest issue of GQ, Pitt acknowledged that his career is currently in a different place than it was years ago, but offered some clarifications to his previous remarks.

“Well, now I’m making a movie in a year and a half,” he said. “I’m still on the same trajectory. I feel the same. I’m really just trying to enjoy the people I love around me and just live.”

When confronted directly with his “last leg” quote, the 60-year-old Missouri native said he views his professional life as “steps.”

“You know, it was the move out of the safety of the Ozarks. You go on this thing and it’s all about discovery and it’s really exciting and interesting and painful and horrible and all that,” he explained. “And then when you get into the big leagues, it becomes another game with responsibilities and things to answer for. But also opportunities and joy and working with people you really respect. And then now it’s that time. It’s: What are these last years going to be like?”

“In your 80s, your body becomes more frail,” he continued. “And yet I look at Frank Gehry. He’s just the most lovable person. And he’s 95 and he’s still making great art and has a wonderful family. And I think that’s kind of the formula for staying creative and continuing to love your life.”

Clooney, 63, also expressed his own concerns about Hollywood’s aging population and youth-oriented film industry.

“The phone stops ringing if you decide you want to continue being the character you were at 35 and want a softer lens,” he told GQ. “But if you’re willing to, say, go a little further down the line and do interesting character work, then you can kind of – you have to come to terms with the idea that you’re going to die!”

He further noted: “As long as you can come to terms with the idea of change, it’s fine. The difficult part, and I know many actors who do this – and you too – is the not let it go and try desperately to hold on to it.”

Clooney and Pitt first appeared together in the successful 2001 remake of the Rat Pack classic “Ocean’s Eleven.” They later reprised their roles in two sequels: “Ocean’s Twelve” and “Ocean’s Thirteen.”

“Wolfs” — whose title is intentionally misspelled — is set to hit theaters next month. Clooney and Pitt play two “fixers” hired to cover up a high-profile crime. According to Variety, writer-director Jon Watts is already working on a sequel, in which both of the film’s leads are expected to return.

Pitt will also soon be seen in the Formula 1 racing drama “F1,” which will be released in theaters next year.
