Sean Payton complains that the Broncos commit “way too many fouls”
One of Sean Payton’s biggest scares occurred on an otherwise excellent Sunday night for the Denver Broncoswhich defeated the Green Bay Packers 27-2 in its first home game of the preseason.
“We have received enough penalties for three games and we need to fix a lot of them,” complained the experienced head coach.
That’s an estimate; the exact number of penalties the Broncos committed was 13. Not included were 120 yards and two notable non-plays, including a Bo Nix touchdown that was called back for an illegal forward pass.
The week before, Denver was penalized six times, negating 60 yards in a 34-30 win over the Indianapolis Colts.
“We have a 38-yard run that was called back for a penalty. I want to look at the tape,” Payton said in his postgame press conference. “Like I said at the beginning, (we had) way too many fouls. It sets you back. They take away yards, but more importantly, they take away field position.”

After criticising Broncos predecessor Nathaniel Hackett for “one of the worst coaching jobs in history” partly due to rule violations, Payton’s team committed 99 penalties last season (15th-most in the NFL), 40 of which were pre-snap.
The situation remains ongoing.
“There’s going to be a number of things that we look at on tape and are happy with, and there’s going to be some things that we obviously need to clean up,” Payton said Sunday.
