Fan-favorite role of Toph in season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender confirms she has not been cast
It seems that the search for Toph for the upcoming second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender has ended and one of the favorites (at least among fans) has posted a disappointing update explaining that she didn’t get the role.
For those who don’t know, Diana Tsoy was a fan favorite for the role of Toph after she delivered a stunning performance in a concept video posted to social media in January 2024; the YouTube video alone has been viewed nearly 1 million times.
In it, Tsoy is seen in Toph’s attire defending herself against a number of attackers, using a mix of martial arts and earthbending to fend them off. The comments on the video are raving, with one saying, “She’s got all of Toph’s mannerisms, not looking directly at the opponent, her wide stance, the Mantis style, perfect!” and another saying, “The way she just puts her heel down tells me that you totally understand her character and her fighting style. The way she moves one guy into the other guy’s attack was perfect for her! Very well done, the actors pulled off the choreography and you absolutely feel like Toph is listening and waiting for every opportunity.”
In case you missed it over the summer, Netflix put out an open casting call for the role of Toph, who plays a major role in the next two seasons as the series delves deeper into the Earth Kingdom. The open casting call specifically invited blind and visually impaired people to apply. In recent weeks, we also learned that Netflix has been casting for the roles of Ursa and Long Feng, as well as three new roles that did not appear in the original Nickelodeon series.
Overnight, the young actress shared in a video on Instagram that she didn’t get the role. “I wanted to update you on my journey to Toph,” Tsoy begins the video, adding: “So, unfortunately, I didn’t get the role. This is pretty sad news for me. As you probably know, I’ve been aiming for this role for a very long time. I started my journey to Toph in 2021 when they just started filming Season 1 in Vancouver, and in 2022 my video pitch for Toph was accidentally leaked online, but I don’t regret it because then I wouldn’t have you by my side.”
As the video continues, Tsoy asks fans to support the production’s final choice for the role, saying she is 100% sure they chose the best young actress for the role. She explains that the person who got the role had to go through a rigorous audition process, which Tsong calls “pretty crazy.”
There is no information yet on when the casting for Toph will be publicly announced. However, we do know that Geeked Week is coming up, and from the teaser trailer released by Netflix, we know that Avatar: The Last Airbender is set to be seen. However, since production on the second season doesn’t begin until October, you should keep your visual expectations to a minimum.
