Civilization 7: Everything we know about the new game so far
Civilization 7 is officially on the way, and it’s already one of the most exciting new games coming in 2025. And it’s easy to see why. It’s been over seven years since we got a new main entry in the Civilization series, and players who enjoy conquering land or betraying political allies have been waiting patiently.
Fortunately, it was announced during the Summer Games Fest 2024 in June that one of the best strategy game series is returning. Civilization 7, developed by Firaxis Games, will once again let us build great civilizations while investing in technology trees and racing for milestones on our way to victory. Although there isn’t much information about the upcoming game yet, there is still a lot to talk about before its release next year.
That’s why we’ve compiled everything you need to know about Civilization 7 below. From the release date to the gameplay, the trailer, and much more, we haven’t missed a single hexagon.
Civilization 7 release date
It has been confirmed that the release date for Civilization 7 will be February 11, 2025. However, players who choose to purchase the Deluxe and Founders Editions of the game will also receive five days of early access, allowing them to start playing on February 6, 2025.
This massive news was announced during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024, but not before it was leaked by social media account billbil-kun. There’s always one, right?
Some people still think I stopped leaking stuff because the YouTube source was fixed lol. Anyway, Sid Meier’s Civilization VII (CIV 7) is coming out 📅 February 11, 2025🗒️ Editions: Standard & Deluxe#CIV7 pic.twitter.com/4BnPgECP4o20 August 2024
We’ve known for some time that Civ 7’s publisher 2K Games is aiming for an early release next year, according to video game holding company Take-Two Interactive’s earnings report, so this news about the release date is by no means a huge surprise, but at least we now know we only have a few more months to wait.

Civilization 7 gameplay
Civilization 7 is a 4X strategy game in which players try to build the strongest civilization by working their way through different eras of history into the near future. During Gamescom 2024, we got a first look at the gameplay and it seems like the upcoming title will essentially follow the same formula as the other games in the series.
This means the focus will likely be on exploring, expanding, gathering resources, and ultimately defeating the competition. While we expect the game to stay true to the turn-based core and technology tree of all Civilization games, we also know that some modern features will be implemented.
First, Civilization 7 won’t have that annoying 2K launcher like Civ 6. We’re also getting a new diplomacy screen and city tile development will return. Units can also sail upriver and the most exciting new feature is that at the start of each new era you can choose a new civilization that your leader will command.
That’s right folks, there’s a big shake-up happening. Historical context, gameplay decisions, and choice of leader will determine which civilization you can choose in a new era, so every action you take here matters! Oh, and one more cool gameplay development: the game’s narrator is Gwendoline Christie, known from Game of Thrones. We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
Civilization 7 Platforms
The good news is that Civilization 7 will be available on both PC and consoles from day one. That’s right, everyone will have the chance to hoard resources and dominate the map, no matter what system they own.
The fully confirmed Civilization 7 platforms are PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PCThe game will be released to everyone at the same time, which means there are no exclusive titles planned.
Civilization 7 trailer
Watch on
We got our first Civilization 7 gameplay trailer during Gamescom 2024, and it was great. In the clip, we see shots from Africa, Europe, and more as the camera scans the globe. There are units traveling up rivers on boats, tornadoes swirling in the distance, and of course, plenty of wars in the never-ending struggle for power.
Honestly, Civ has never looked better than it does here. Each civilization in the teaser is vibrant and unique. Additionally, the trailer seems to hint that natural disasters will play a big role in the upcoming game, as we see erupting volcanoes, the aforementioned tornadoes, and thunderstorms swirling around units and buildings across the map. It’s all very exciting and we can’t wait to dive in.
