How big is Godzilla anyway?
If you saw the recent teaser trailer for the upcoming Godzilla, you were probably pretty overwhelmed by the sheer size of the titular creature. Based on the few glimpses we caught of the beast, it looks like Japan’s King of the Monsters will be getting a significant size increase for his second Hollywood outing.
According to this fan-made chart, the city-destroying star of director Gareth Edwards’ “Godzilla” reboot is more than three times the size of the original version and the version from Roland Emmerich’s 1998 film of the same name. Godzilla has appeared in more than 30 films since his debut in the 1954 classic “Gojira” and is traditionally depicted as being between 50 and 100 meters tall.
The monster in Edwards’ version, on the other hand, is likely 120 to 150 meters tall (or nearly 500 feet). Some intrepid fans have speculated that the 2014 version of Godzilla is even taller—over 250 meters, or more than 820 feet—citing certain real-life skyscrapers seen in the trailer.

The monster was usually portrayed by a man in a rubber suit, so creating Godzilla with visual effects obviously increases the size possibilities for filmmakers. Although Edwards didn’t reveal the exact size of his Godzilla, he said it would be the biggest “King of the Monsters” ever.
“I think I can say the biggest ever. Something like that,” Edwards told IGN at Comic Con last summer. “It’s like when they built the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, when they put little antennas on it and it looks like it’s the biggest. We did a lot of tests on size, it’s not that we just didn’t pick it; we did all these tests that we created and he’s a certain size for a reason. If you make him too big, you can’t have as much fun and tell the story. If you make him too small, he’s not quite as scary. I think the size we gave him is just right for him.”
How does this new Godzilla compare to other recent movie monsters, like the Kaiju from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim (2013) or the alien beast from Matt Reeves’ Cloverfield (2008)? The robot Jaegers and Kaiju monsters from the first film all reached a height of about 85 meters (or 280 feet), and the creature from Cloverfield was about 100 meters (or 350 feet). The 2014 Godzilla would dwarf them all.
Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston and Ken Watanabe, “Godzilla” will be released in cinemas on May 16, 2014.
