Basilan to be declared free of Abu Sayyaf; wanted posters to be removed
In preparation for the declaration that the province is free of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), several wanted posters and tarpaulins were removed in Basilan.
According to the 101st Infantry Brigade, the upcoming declaration of Basilan as an ASG-free province “will be a historic milestone that underscores the successful efforts to eradicate terrorism and radicalism.”
“This initiative is intended to promote further regional development and investment and consolidate the hard-won peace,” said the 101st Infantry Brigade.
The military said the removal of the ASG wanted posters was the culmination of a long-running security campaign against the Islamist extremist group in the province.
“The decision to remove the ASG wanted posters and tarpaulins is intended to create a new sense of normalcy and security for the residents of Basileño,” the 101st Infantry Brigade said.
Remnants of the ASG have been considered and declared as “criminal elements” because they continue to carry out criminal activities, including extortion and serious threats.
“They no longer have the ability to influence the community and no longer have the support system they need to survive,” the 101st Infantry Brigade added. —GMA Regional Television
