Follow the clues
We pick up where we left off episode 2: Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn) and Rosa Campesino (Natalie Martinez) meet for coffee, coincidentally at the cafe owned by Neville’s (Ronald Peet) sister, where he’s helping out. Rosa confirms that her lab is testing the DNA of the bone fragments found in the Stripling house.
Yancy reveals that he is actually at the cafe to conduct an inspection, much to Rosa’s chagrin. Yancy finds the place fine except for the presence of Neville’s monkey Driggs, but after a conversation with Neville, he agrees to conduct a second inspection a week later.
Next, Yancy and Rosa meet with Madeline, the girlfriend of the murdered captain, to question her. She reveals that her boyfriend got $3,000 to attach the arm to the fishing line, but she doesn’t know from whom.
Meanwhile, Neville returns home to the Bahamas with his sister’s money. He plans to go fishing, but discovers that Christopher has launched his boat to clean the beach, and the man begins shooting at Neville with his gun in an attempt to get him off the beach.
Meanwhile, Yancy and Rosa are out in Nick Stripling’s office looking for clues and Yancy gets a call from Bonnie Witt (Michelle Monaghan). The woman won’t tell Yancy where she is, but seems to be having fun and he blames her for the crime he found out she committed.
As the duo searches Nick’s office, Rosa questions him about his relationship with Bonnie. They then find a document mentioning a doctor named “Israel O’Peele,” but are forced to leave shortly afterward as FBI investigators show up. As they rush out the back door, a guard dog bites Yancy.
Investigation or date?
After tracking him down, Yancy and Rosa visit Israel O’Peele (Zach Braff), an alcoholic and drug-addicted doctor who wants immunity before answering any questions. However, he reveals that Nick’s medical business was actually an insurance scam with no real customers. He also seems to recognize the picture of the shot captain, but refuses to say more, so Yancy leaves his contact information. The cop also takes a brochure from his apartment.
Back in the Bahamas, Neville visits the Dragon Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith) to ask her why her curse isn’t working, but as there’s a funeral going on, he returns later. That evening, he pays her extra to deliver the trial, but her grandmother demands that he sacrifice something else to prove his loyalty. At her behest, he gives her Driggs, but the monkey doesn’t seem happy about it.
O’Peele frantically calls Eve Stripling (Meredith Hagner), tells her about the meeting and asks what’s going on, but she plays dumb. She tells him to come visit her in the Bahamas for a break. He then notices that Yancy has taken the brochure from the apartment.
Yancy and Rosa grab ice cream at the end of the day and she reveals that the DNA from the bone fragment is back: she matches Nick Stripling. As they eat, he asks her questions about herself and she says she’s afraid it will feel like a date.
At the same time, Neville visits a friend and discovers that he has been beaten up by Egg (which happened in the last episode). Neville plans to break into Christopher’s office to find incriminating evidence against him. To do so, he takes his friend’s gun.
When Yancy gets home that night, another house showing is going on at his neighbor’s mansion, and he makes jokes to scare off the potential buyers. Then he sees the black van chasing him again, and he tries to chase it, but is too slow.
A change in the number of fatalities
The next morning, Madeline calls Yancy and says she’s being followed, but he convinces her otherwise. Then he gets a text from O’Peele, who is willing to talk. The cop picks up his new car from the sheriff and innocently asks about the arm drop, only to learn that Caitlin signed off saying the death was an accident.
Meanwhile, Rosa is doing her own research. She discovers that there are very few records about this “Christopher” and that he apparently doesn’t even exist. She also asks a colleague about Yancy and learns that he has a reputation as something of a wreck.
Yancy visits Caitlin (Charlotte Lawrence) to confront her, as he found out that Eve offered her a portion of Nick’s life insurance as hush money. He makes her regret that decision by confirming that Eve killed Nick. Next, Yancy tries to visit O’Peele, only to find that someone broke into his house and shot him!
Yancy goes to Rosa to tell her about O’Peele and so she can heal his wounds from the dog bite. While Rosa is on the phone with her sister, we also learn that the popular weatherwoman Heather has disappeared.
At night, Neville breaks into Christopher’s office in the Bahamas to look for evidence, but Chris’s henchman Egg shows up and Neville can only escape by threatening the man with a gun.
At the same time, Rosa and Yancy rush to Caitlin, fearing that she will be the target of whoever covered up the loose ends, but find her unharmed.
At the same time, Caitlin goes to Eve’s house to confront her. She points a gun at her mother-in-law and accuses her of killing Nick. This is disproved when Nick himself shows up, armless – he’s not dead at all!
