Has proven that he can score goals in the league
Davis, 27, has played four seasons in the NBA. He signed with the Toronto Raptors as an undrafted free agent out of Ole Miss in July 2019. Davis played four seasons for the school, serving primarily as a starter in the last three. As a senior, he was named to the All-SEC Second Team in 2018-19.
Despite going undrafted, Davis was a member of Toronto’s rotation for much of his rookie season in 2019-20. The Mississippi native finished sixth in Rookie of the Year voting and was named to the All-Rookie Second Team. Davis averaged 7.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists that season.
Because Davis received slightly less playing time in his second season, he was traded to the Kings in exchange for a second-round pick in March 2021. In his 27 games with Sacramento during the 2020–21 season, he averaged 11.1 points.
2021-22 turned out to be Davis’ most productive season. Unfortunately, it ended prematurely in February as he had to undergo season-ending wrist surgery. In 30 games (11 starts), Davis averaged 10.4 points in 17.9 minutes per game. On January 19, 2022, Davis scored a career-high 35 points against the Detroit Pistons.
In the 2022–23 season, the Kings finally ended their 16 consecutive seasons from 2006–07 to 2021–22 without reaching the playoffs. With a better roster, Davis received less playing time. He finished the season with his current career-low average of 13.1 minutes and 6.7 points.
In his four NBA seasons, Davis has played in 227 regular season games (24 starts) for the Raptors and Kings. His career averages are 8.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists. Davis has shot 43.4% from the field, 36.6% from the three-point zone and 82.6% from the free throw line.
Unfortunate injury last season
Unable to secure an NBA contract last season, Davis joined Rip City Remix of the G League. He reportedly had an offer from the EuroLeague that would have brought him more salary, but Davis still dreamed of returning to the NBA. Unfortunately, he only played three games for Remix. A torn Achilles tendon sidelined Davis for the rest of the season.
The numbers game in Milwaukee will make it difficult for Davis to secure a spot on the Bucks’ roster. They already have 14 guaranteed contracts for 2024-25, leaving only one open. They also have a partially guaranteed contract with guard Andre Jackson Jr. According to Spotrac, $945,929 of his $1,891,857 salary is guaranteed in 2024-25. The contract will be fully guaranteed if Jackson Jr. is still on the roster by Jan. 10, 2025.
While Davis probably won’t start the Bucks’ opening game, if he shows enough in practice, he may be able to get an Exhibit 10 contract. That would at least allow Davis to showcase his talent in preseason games, which could draw interest from another team.
